The Elastic family unites employees across 30+ countries into one coherent team, while the broader community spans across over 100 countries.

Instead, we are looking for bright people with a good knowledge of Java and a desire to take on new challenges.

Engineering a highly complex distributed system that is easy to operate via elegantly designed APIs is a non-trivial effort. It requires solid software development skills, and more importantly, a sharp mind and the ability to think like a user. We also care deeply about giving you full ownership of what you’re working on.

Our company fundamentally believes great minds achieve greatness when they are set free and are surrounded and challenged by their peers, which is clearly visible in our organization. At Elastic, we effectively don’t have a hierarchy to speak of. We feel that anyone needs to be in the position to comment on absolutely anything, regardless of their role within the company.

Right now, we are looking to add a talented Java Engineer to join our Elasticsearch team and focussing on Security.

These are the kinds of problems you will work on

  • Design and implement internal security mechanisms to secure individual Elasticsearch clusters as well as provide security for cross cluster operations
  • Implement access control for Elasticsearch APIs, documents, and fields within documents
  • Ownership and sharing of objects with differing permissions in Elasticsearch
  • Design and implement new horizontally-scalable features and APIs in Elasticsearch and X-Pack.
  • Integrate new features from Lucene
  • Improve existing APIs to make them address more use-cases while keeping their surface area contained.
  • Look into all kind of issues, including performance or concurrency issues, and propose solutions.
  • Supporting our support engineers with the harder problems.

Could you answer most of these questions?

  • When would you make a variable volatile?
  • How do you decide whether to use a HashMap or a TreeMap?
  • How do you decide whether to use a CopyOnWriteArrayList or a Collections.synchronizedList(ArrayList)?
  • When would you use mergesort over quicksort?
  • When might recursion cause stack overflows?
  • Is Math.abs(Random.nextInt()) always positive?
  • What are the pros/cons of async vs. blocking I/O?
  • What unit tests would you write for Arrays.binarySearch?

Experience in these areas is a plus:

  • Distributed systems, networking
  • Search, analytics, Lucene
  • Systems integration, JVM debugging

Additional Information

  • Competitive pay and benefits
  • Stock options
  • Catered lunches, snacks, and beverages in most offices
  • An environment in which you can balance great work with a great life
  • Passionate people building great products
  • Employees with a wide variety of interests
  • Your age is only a number. It doesn't matter if you're just out of college or your children are; we need you for what you can do.
  • Distributed-first company with employees in over 35 countries, spread across 18 time zones, and speaking over 30 languages! Some even fly south for the winter :)

NOW HIRING: Javascript Developer

Company: Paperplane
Website: http://paperplanehq.com
Headquarter: Phoenix, Arizona, United States

We’re looking for someone who’s passionate about building awesome tools and applications.

You’re probably a freelancer and have that entrepreneurial bug. Having a 9-to-5 or being one of many developers isn’t appealing to you. You don’t want to commute, work in a cubicle, or even be tied to any particular place. You simply want to be armed with a laptop, make cool stuff, and live an awesome life…

You enjoy solving unique problems and feel most at home knee deep in code and photoshop/sketch. You’re obsessive about building things right the first time.

When you're given a task, you take ownership and find the most effective way to complete it, whether or not it requires a bajillion rounds of trial and error.

If this sounds like you, read on….

Who we are

We’re a small, bootstrapped team of driven product creators who have a passion for making cool (and useful) stuff! For the past 5 years we’ve been helping people grow their businesses by marketing their products/services online. Now, we’re expanding our impact by creating Spiffy (Spiffy.co) and it’s already made quite the splash in the marketing industry with an easy, yet powerful way to create checkout pages. We believe in rapid iteration and testing with the market rather than perfecting things that may just ultimately flop down the road.

Our Stack

All of our front-end code is built on a framework using Bootstrap and Mithril with styling being done using Sass/SCSS to keep it readable. We use Mithril for basic interactivity. We use Laravel (PHP/MySQL) for our backends. Our apps are deployed on individual Ubuntu servers hosted by DigitalOcean to allow for rapid scale and easy deployment.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll be working on deploying new features to Spiffy and coming up with creative ways to overcome technical challenges. You’ll be responsible for the full lifecycle of user experience from design, coding, and thinking through ways to make users lives easier – you have the opportunity to own every part and will be playing a critical role in the growth of Spiffy.

--Develop new products and applications
--Prototype new and existing ideas
--Develop early technical and UX concepts
--Research and solve for technical/UX issues
--Improve existing front-end and user experience flows

Skills we’re looking for

--3+ years of front-end and Javascript development experience
--Very strong Javascript skills
--Strong CSS/HTML skills
--Preferably worked as freelancer or independent contractor
--Diverse knowledge and passion for both front-end and design/ux
--Experience working on a team within an MVC framework
--Experience building web applications in a team environment, not just websites
--Experience with Mithril and/or Laravel are huge bonus points!

All the details

This gig is a remote contractor position and gives you the freedom to make your own hours, work when you want, and where you want. Need to pick your kids up from school? Have to catch a football game? Do it! Ultimately we're looking for a long-term relationship and someone who can grow as the company grows (both in responsibility and in compensation). To demonstrate that you've read this posting, please include the word 'waffle' in your response :)

Compensation: Based on experience

Location: Anywhere

Up to full-time
